Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom has confirmed that BlackBerry 10 OS users won’t be getting the photo-sharing app “anytime soon”.
Already available on Android and iOS, Instagram definitely won’t arrive on BlackBerry 10 or Windows Phone operating systems in the near future.
Speaking to Fast Company, Systrom was actually speaking about the possibility of a forthcoming Instagram app for Google Glass.
“We’re not yet on BlackBerry or Windows Phone, so I think those will come before Google Glass,” explained Systrom.
However, this led him to quickly add that neither a BB10 or Windows Phone Instagram app are on the cards in the immediate future.
“I’m not saying those will come anytime soon. I’m just saying that in order of priority, the way we evaluate where to expand to is really simply where our users are, and where the growth is. It took us a very long time to get to Android.”
Instagram was previously an iOS only app, but eventually made it into the Google Play store for Android devices in early 2012. This was around 18 months after it launched for iOS, by which point it had already accrued over 25 million users on Apple devices.
When the Android Instagram app was announced it was one of the most eagerly anticipated app releases and within 10 days of launching boosted the Instagram user base to 40 million.
The Facebook owned photo-sharing app recently added a new Instagram video functionality to ape the success of Vine.
Vine allows iOS and Android users to create 6-second looping videos and has seen great success, especially via social media sites. The Twitter owned video app will now face stiff competition from Instagram’s new video feature.
Instagram video lets users create 15-second video clips complete with 13 of the app’s distinctive features.
Unfortunately, it looks like BlackBerry 10 and Windows Phone will both have to go without Instagram and its new video function for the foreseeable future.
